Is SugarSync Worth Paying More for a Simple Cloud Backup Service?

SugarSync overview

While the “less is more” philosophy can be admirable, does it apply to a cloud backup service like SugarSync? If you’re into simplicity, it might, but after a thorough review, I have some concerns.

To be clear, I don’t need an overload of features to feel satisfied with a cloud solution—sometimes all I need is a reliable way to back up my music or photo files from my computer or mobile device. And for those basic needs, SugarSync delivers.

However, if I want to access a song or photo I’ve just backed up, the media player is only available on the mobile app, not the desktop or web client. Additionally, syncing an iPhoto library is restricted to one device at a time, unlike other services that support syncing across unlimited devices.

These small inconveniences raise questions about why certain features aren’t fully available across SugarSync’s platforms and whether the subscription costs truly reflect the service’s value.

With price in mind, I also looked at more advanced features like file sync speed and security—and noted other minor drawbacks—in my review.

Honestly, for similar functionality at a lower price, I’d recommend looking at iDrive or Backblaze. That said, SugarSync does have some redeeming qualities, which I’ll outline below.

What Is SugarSync

SugarSync is a cloud storage and file synchronization service that allows users to store, access, and share files across multiple devices. It offers features like automatic backup, file versioning, and easy sharing, making it suitable for both personal and business use.

Who Is It For?

Individuals: People who need a reliable way to back up personal files, such as photos, documents, and videos, can benefit from SugarSync’s automatic syncing and easy access from various devices.

Remote Workers: Those who work from different locations can access their files from anywhere, ensuring productivity regardless of the work environment.

Creative Professionals: Artists, designers, and photographers can store large files and easily share them with clients or collaborators.

File Sharing

SugarSync delivers what it promises as a cloud backup and file-sharing service. It’s also a great choice for those seeking integration with third-party apps like JotForm, Google Drive, and Asana, making it useful for work purposes. For example, its Microsoft Outlook plugin allows users to share large files seamlessly.

Here’s a deeper dive into four essential features: Backups, Data Restore, Security, and Remote Wipe.

Backups

Backups When you add a file or folder to SugarSync, it is automatically backed up online after any change or edit, ensuring real-time updates. For added security, you can set up a Protected Folder, which enables scheduled backups and saves up to 12 versions of each file (compared to the usual five). However, keep in mind that these extra versions will consume more storage.

It’s important to note that SugarSync does not offer full hard drive backups, but instead backs up data on a file or folder level.

In addition to offering cloud backup, SugarSync’s business plans also support network-attached storage devices.

Restoring Data

Restoring previous versions of files is simple, and the added versioning feature in Protected Folders enhances your control when needing to revert unwanted changes—especially useful for collaborative work. When you delete a file or folder, it moves to a Deleted Items folder accessible through the desktop or mobile app. SugarSync retains deleted items for up to 30 days, providing ample time to reconsider or correct mistakes.

Security

SugarSync’s security features are somewhat lacking. While two-factor authentication is a standard expectation for most apps, SugarSync does not offer it, so it’s crucial to choose a strong password. Additionally, the absence of private encryption keys is a significant drawback for those sharing sensitive files. However, this can be somewhat alleviated by using end-to-end encryption software like BoxCryptor. On a positive note, the service employs AES 256-bit encryption and the TLS protocol to safeguard against man-in-the-middle attacks. The Protected Folders feature also allows you to restore versions of files prior to any ransomware attacks.

Remote Wipe

One of SugarSync’s notable features is Remote Wipe, which lets you log out of your account on all synced devices and delete files from them. This action removes files only from those devices while keeping them accessible through the web client. This means that if your laptop or phone is lost or stolen, you can rest assured that your backup remains secure and uncompromised.

Its drag-and-drop functionality makes uploading and organizing files easy, while the selective sync feature lets users choose specific folders to sync, offering flexibility and control.

ease of use

Simple, Intuitive Interface on the SugarSync Apps

SugarSync’s desktop app boasts an attractive and straightforward user interface.

easy user interface

As you navigate through folders, the breadcrumb navigation allows you to easily return to previous locations. To locate a specific file or folder, you can use the search tool at the top of the navigation bar, which even includes results from your Deleted Items folder.

In contrast, the web client feels somewhat outdated and lacks the full range of features offered by the service. However, this wasn’t a significant concern for me, as I primarily rely on the desktop and mobile apps (more details on the mobile app below).

Let’s take a closer look at some of SugarSync’s key features that enhance its usability.

A Mobile App to Enhance the Desktop App Experience

The mobile app closely resembles the desktop version, and both enable file sharing through link copying, email, or various communication apps you prefer. The mobile app also offers some extra useful features, such as the automatic backup of photos and videos from your device.

MOBILE APPS

While the web client and desktop app lack media playback functionality, you can directly play music and video files using the mobile app.

Effortless Syncing and Sharing Across Platforms

SugarSync makes it simple to sync and share files, whether through the web client or the desktop and mobile apps. In just a few clicks, you can share your backup folders and files with anyone, even if they don’t have a SugarSync account, via email or by generating a public link. When sharing by invitation, you can set permissions for either editing or view-only access.

public link shared

You can also share links directly to social networks like Twitter and Facebook from the web client.

Dedicated Email Address for File Uploads

Another useful feature SugarSync offers is Upload by Email, allowing you to back up files by sending them to a unique email address linked to your account. This simplifies backing up email attachments significantly. Anyone with this unique email address can send files for backup, which is especially beneficial for business accounts with multiple collaborators. These files will be stored in their own dedicated folder.

Account Setup

Setting up a SugarSync account is straightforward. You can create an account online before downloading the desktop app or do it directly through the app. Either way, the process is quick, and the service can be ready in just a few clicks.

Setting up a backup is also easy. When you first open the app, simply navigate to the menu, select the folder(s) you want to back up, and hit Save. Your files will then be backed up to the SugarSync Cloud and accessible from any connected device.

account setup

It’s convenient that the app utilizes your device’s existing file structure, making it easy to locate what you need.

easy to find folder menu

To schedule backups, you’ll need to take one final step: create a Protected Folder and select a frequency option—daily, every three, seven, or fourteen days, or monthly.

I think the service could benefit from some enhancements to simplify backups further. For instance, it could provide updates on the progress of uploads or downloads and include a summary of your last backup, such as its duration and timing. Currently, the activity page only displays the date and time each individual file was added.

PERFORMANCE |4.5| ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A Fast Service with Some Inconsistencies

To evaluate SugarSync’s online backup services, I tested a folder containing 4.7GB of files. Being located in Sayulita, Mexico, I am relatively close to SugarSync’s U.S. servers. However, since SugarSync does not disclose the locations or the number of its servers, I can’t confirm the exact proximity.

It’s worth mentioning that connection speeds in Mexico can vary, especially with WiFi, and both download and upload speeds fluctuate throughout the day. On average, my download speed is 18.69 Mbps, while my upload speed is 7.85 Mbps.

My initial full backup started at 9:22 a.m. on a weekday and took 2 hours, 45 minutes, and 29 seconds. Restoring my files was straightforward and only required a few clicks, taking 1 hour, 24 minutes, and 39 seconds to retrieve all the data. While these times are relatively slow, they coincide with periods when my upload and download speeds are at their lowest.

I conducted a second test later that same day at 4:56 p.m., using the same test folder after deleting the original backup. I was surprised when the backup completed in under 3 minutes, initially thinking it might be a mistake. After restarting my computer and trying again, I received the same result. To double-check, I created an exact copy of the original folder and performed the backup once more, which took exactly 3 minutes and 39 seconds. However, the restore process took significantly longer, clocking in at 1 hour, 1 minute, and 24 seconds, primarily due to the video files. (Note: While we mention “again” here, the first reference was in the photo caption above, which could easily be overlooked by readers.)

For my third test, conducted on Saturday afternoon at 2:18 p.m., the backup finished in an impressive 55 seconds, while the restore took 55 minutes and 25 seconds.

Throughout all three tests, I didn’t notice any substantial slowdown in other computer functions. However, if you find that SugarSync is consuming too much of your bandwidth, you can adjust the speeds from the preferences menu in the desktop app.

Higher Cost Compared to Comparable Services

Although SugarSync appears to be average at first, my comparison with similar services like Carbonite and iDrive revealed that it offers relatively low value, particularly regarding its business plans.

pricing details

The pricing structure is straightforward. All three personal plans provide the same features and support unlimited devices, with differences in cost based solely on the selected storage capacity.

The smallest personal backup plan offers 100GB of data, while the mid-level and top-tier plans provide 100GB and 250GB, respectively.

Each plan begins with a 30-day free trial during which you’ll need to enter your credit card information. You won’t be charged until the trial period ends, and you can cancel at any time before that.

SugarSync also offers a free option that includes 5GB of storage, requiring no payment information, but it expires after 90 days. To keep your account active beyond this period, you must upgrade to a paid plan. Upgrading is easy through the web app, and you may qualify for a significant discount on your first year.

Payment can be made using Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover cards. If you wish to increase the storage of your Personal plan, you can do so through your account page.

For cloud backup tailored to small businesses, consider SugarSync’s Business plan, which provides 1TB of storage for up to three users. If your company has more than three employees, you can request a custom plan accommodating up to ten users. Additionally, this plan includes an option to pay for unlimited storage.
