IDrive has been a leading cloud backup service since the concept first emerged, and a quick search will show that many consider it the top choice for cloud backups. Is it, nevertheless, the greatest choice for you?
IDrive offers three types of accounts: a free 5GB Basic plan, paid Personal, and paid Business accounts. One of IDrive’s standout features is the ability to back up an unlimited number of PCs, Macs, and mobile devices, regardless of which plan you choose. For Business accounts, there’s also the option for an unlimited number of users.
However, despite its strong reputation, IDrive has a few limitations. Unlike services such as Backblaze and Carbonite, IDrive does not offer unlimited data backup plans, so you’ll need to stay within a set data limit. Additionally, it’s not the most user-friendly service, and backups can take time. (You can read more about my experience backing up a 3GB folder in the Performance section.)
If you’re able to manage within your plan’s data limits and need to back up multiple devices under one account, IDrive is a solid choice. But if ease of use and unlimited backup storage are your top priorities, there may be better options available.

IDrive is packed with impressive features, many of which aren’t available with other cloud backup services.
One of the most valuable features is Snapshots, which provides a historical view of your data, allowing you to restore files from any previous point in time.
Disk cloning is another highlight, enabling you to back up your computer’s entire drive and system image, including the operating system and installed applications. Additionally, hybrid backups allow you to encrypt and store your files both on local devices and in the IDrive cloud.
IDrive even includes a feature called IDrive Face, which uses facial recognition on your backed-up photos, making them easier to organize. So, if you’re looking for that perfect beach selfie from last summer, it’s easy to find. Plus, IDrive offers backup options for your Facebook and Instagram accounts—something not many competitors provide.
Instead of diving deep into these extra features, I’ll focus this review on the essentials.
With IDrive, you can back up files from all your devices (and for Business plans, from multiple users) to a single account—an option you won’t find with other cloud backup services.
Setting up backups is straightforward. You can schedule them daily or weekly and specify the time they occur. IDrive also offers continuous automatic backups, which can be set to run in real-time or at intervals of 10, 30, or 60 minutes.
With regular backups, you can upload as many files as you need, up to your plan’s storage limit, but individual files can’t exceed 10GB. For continuous backups, the same storage limit applies, but individual files must be under 500MB.
One of IDrive’s standout features is IDrive Express, a service where the company sends you an external hard drive to handle large backups without consuming your internet bandwidth for weeks or even months. This is particularly helpful for first-time uploads.
While some other services offer physical backups, IDrive is the only one that provides this option for free. Personal plan users get one free IDrive Express backup per year, while Business plans offer three. You can request additional backups, but these come at a cost nearly equal to your annual subscription. For US customers, shipping for IDrive Express is free.
Business users can also back up Linux machines, as well as SQL, Exchange, Oracle, and SharePoint servers. No competitor offers such a wide range of business backup options as IDrive.
Restoring your files from IDrive is simple and can be done on any computer or device linked to your account. Additionally, you can restore data to any synchronized device from your local disks.
IDrive offers true archiving, meaning your files remain in your account indefinitely, available for restoration until you choose to delete them or cancel your paid subscription. Free accounts, however, are closed and files are deleted after 90 days of inactivity.
It’s worth mentioning that IDrive is a true backup service. Unlike syncing platforms like Dropbox or OneDrive, IDrive keeps your files even if you delete them from your computer or device—perfect for those who occasionally delete important files by mistake while organizing.
For physical restores, IDrive offers a courier service via IDrive Express, but this comes at an additional cost, which can be as much as your subscription fee.
IDrive uses server-side 256-bit AES encryption, which is approved by the Department of Defense for top-secret data. So, while this offers the same level of security as classified information, it doesn’t mean you’re a secret agent! Even IDrive Express and local backups are protected with this level of encryption.
You can also set up a private 256-bit AES encryption key, ensuring that only you have access to your data. This isn’t something you get with sync services like Dropbox, OneDrive, or Google Drive. Instead of using a system-generated key, you create your own, and it isn’t stored on IDrive’s servers, so it’s up to you to remember it.
IDrive also offers two-step verification for added protection. After enabling it through the web app, you’ll need to enter a verification code emailed to you in addition to your password whenever you sign in.
IDrive’s data centers, located in California, are equipped with advanced physical security features, such as temperature control, smoke detection, fire suppression systems, and video surveillance. For network security, IDrive undergoes regular third-party reviews to identify potential vulnerabilities.
Although IDrive’s security is robust, some competitors take it a step further. For instance, SpiderOak One uses 2048-bit RSA encryption along with 256-bit AES, and it incorporates blockchain security to eliminate human involvement in the authentication process.
IDrive offers a comprehensive range of cloud backup services tailored for both personal and business use. Their platform supports cross-device backup, allowing users to safeguard data across Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android devices. Key features include incremental backups that optimize storage and bandwidth, full disk image backups for complete system recovery, and easy file synchronization and sharing capabilities.
Additionally, IDrive provides secure encryption to protect user data during transfer and storage. With these robust offerings, IDrive caters to diverse backup needs while ensuring reliability and security.
IDrive’s Endpoint Cloud Backup provides comprehensive data protection for businesses by enabling backups from laptops, desktops, and servers. IDrive is designed with user-friendliness in mind, making it accessible for both tech-savvy users and those less familiar with cloud services. The straightforward setup process allows users to quickly create an account and start backing up their data with minimal effort. The intuitive interface makes navigation simple, enabling users to easily configure backup settings, manage files, and monitor backup progress without confusion.
Additionally, IDrive offers a range of features that enhance its usability. The real-time backup functionality ensures that files are continuously protected, while the mobile app allows users to access and manage their backups on the go.
Once IDrive is set up, it’s relatively straightforward to use. However, the initial setup process and navigating its customization options can be a bit tricky.
Despite this, IDrive offers several notable ease-of-use features worth highlighting.
All IDrive apps—whether desktop, web, or mobile—have user-friendly interfaces. In both the desktop and web versions, tabs are clearly labeled, making it easy to navigate between backing up, restoring, and syncing your files.
Modifying which folders or files get backed up is simple. Just click the “Change” button at the bottom of the screen and select the ones you want. Restoring those files or folders to your computer or another connected device is just as straightforward.
However, the Settings tab includes several advanced options that can be a bit confusing. For instance, I wasn’t sure what percentage of failed file backups would warrant receiving a notification.
IDrive makes it easy to sync files across all connected devices. You can log into your IDrive account from any device and access data stored on others. Any changes made to a synced file will automatically update on all linked devices.
This feature is especially useful for Business accounts with multiple users or for Personal accounts when you need to access important files on the go from your phone or tablet.
IDrive stores up to 30 versions of each file on your account, so if something happens to your local files, you can easily recover a recent version. Even if files are deleted from your device, IDrive keeps the versions, and they don’t count toward your plan’s storage quota.
Restoring an earlier version is simple. While IDrive provides a guide, the process only takes a few clicks under the Restore tab.
Setting up an IDrive account is straightforward but can become tricky if you miss an important step, like I did. During the setup, you’ll be prompted to give IDrive and IDriveDaemon full disk access on your computer. Make sure to allow this, or your backups won’t function properly! If you miss it, you can still go to your computer’s privacy settings later to grant full disk access.
I also downloaded the IDrive mobile app on my phone to give it a try. With the mobile app, you can back up your contacts, photos, videos, and calendar from your iOS or Android device. Additionally, you can access and restore any files that you’ve backed up using the desktop or web apps.
I needed to back up a 3GB folder right away, so I clicked “Backup Now” to start the process.
After that, I scheduled automatic daily backups using the Scheduler. These backups only update files that have been changed since the last backup. In the Settings menu, you can also enable continuous backups and set notifications to alert you when backups are finished or if they fail.
I also downloaded the IDrive mobile app on my phone to give it a try. With the mobile app, you can back up your contacts, photos, videos, and calendar from your iOS or Android device. Additionally, you can access and restore any files that you’ve backed up using the desktop or web apps.
1. Create an Account: Visit the IDrive website and sign up for an account. Choose a suitable pricing plan based on your storage needs.
2. Download the Application: Download the IDrive app for your operating system (Windows, macOS, or mobile) and install it on your device.
3. Set Up Backup Preferences: Open the app, log in, and configure your backup settings. Select the files and folders you want to back up and set your preferred backup schedule.
4. Monitor Backups: Once your backups are running, you can monitor progress through the app. Utilize features like file versioning and recovery options to manage your data effectively.
IDrive backups can be time-consuming, particularly during the initial backup. If you have terabytes of data, it could take quite a while. However, compared to some competitors like Carbonite, IDrive performs much faster. Plus, with the option to use IDrive Express for your initial backup, you can prevent your computer from becoming overloaded and overheating from the start.
I tested IDrive with a 3GB folder, running three backups on different days and at various times to determine if the day of the week or time of day made a difference. I also conducted internet speed tests to check for any bandwidth throttling issues during the backups.
After each backup was finished, a Backup operation summary window appeared, similar to this:
Here are my backup and speed test results. (Please note, I’m located 30 miles from the nearest data center, and my Wi-Fi typically averages around 29Mbps for downloads and 8Mbps for uploads.)
Conclusion: The time of day and day of the week didn’t appear to affect the duration of file backups. However, when I inquired with customer support about this, they recommended scheduling backups at night to take advantage of lower internet traffic.
From my usual internet speeds, it seemed I experienced slight throttling issues, particularly during the initial backup. Yet, since all backups took approximately 53 minutes, I can’t be entirely certain. Ah, the enigmas of the internet!
After each backup, I had immediate access to all my files across all devices, which was a positive aspect. However, I noticed a discrepancy in the file count reported by IDrive.
The accurate counts (as displayed in the Backup operation summary image above) were 51 files and 2.99GB, but my quota indicated I had only used 2.8GB. Additionally, the online backup count showed only 42 files totaling 2.24GB. Hmm…
I reached out to customer support about this issue, and they explained that IDrive synchronization can sometimes take a while. However, in my case, the sync never happened. If you experience the same issue, I suggest deleting your files from IDrive and restarting the backup process.
After successfully uploading the full 2.99GB, I tested how long it would take to restore the files back to my computer. IDrive allows you to restore files to any location on any connected device. I chose to restore them to the Documents folder on my MacBook.
The restore process took 43 minutes (around noon on a Saturday). My internet speeds during the restore were slightly faster than during the backup, but not by much.
As for the IDrive mobile app, it only took under a minute to back up my phone’s contacts, calendar, and a few photos and videos, though the total file size was just 14MB.
Speaking of internet speeds, IDrive allows you to control the bandwidth throttle. By default, it’s set to 100% for faster uploads, but you can lower it if you want to use less bandwidth during backups. Just keep in mind that lowering the throttle will make the backup process slower.
I adjusted mine to 50% and backed up the same 3GB folder on a Friday morning. This time, it took a whopping 4 hours and 12 minutes!
When you sign up for IDrive, the company collects personal details like your name, credit card information, address, email, and password. If you upload data from your mobile device or a third-party service (such as email or social media), IDrive will also collect that information. Don’t worry—they’re not interested in your dating profile, fitness routine, or your dog’s name.
IDrive states it won’t share your personal information or files with any third party without your explicit consent unless:
Required by law
need to keep someone safe from death or severe harm
To prevent fraud or abuse of services
To protect its own property rights
However, IDrive does use cookies and session records to ensure quality service, analyze product performance, and enhance user experience.
Since IDrive’s data centers are all located in the US, it’s subject to oversight by the Federal Trade Commission and is governed by laws like the Patriot Act and Five Eyes alliance.
For IDrive Business account holders, your backups comply with various regulations, including:
Sarbanes–Oxley (section 404)
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
Gramm-Leach-Bliley (GLBA)
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)
Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA)
Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS)
European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
EU-US Privacy Shield Framework (though some agencies have declared this framework “invalid” for adequate data protection)
Although some competitors offer stronger privacy measures, IDrive provides military-grade encryption, giving you a high level of data protection, which is still quite impressive.

If you’re like me and prefer to try things out before committing or only need to back up a small number of files, IDrive offers a free Basic plan with 5GB of storage. This plan includes all the features available in the paid IDrive Personal plans.
For more storage, you’ll need to upgrade to either an IDrive Personal or Business account. While there are various Business plan options, the Personal plans are more limited.
With IDrive Personal, you can choose between two options: 5TB or 10TB of storage. However, there are no monthly Personal plans, so you’re locked into an annual subscription, which may be a downside for some. These plans allow one user to back up an unlimited number of devices.
On the other hand, IDrive Business offers plans ranging from 250GB to 12.5TB, with the option for annual or monthly subscriptions. Business accounts support an unlimited number of users and devices, including computers and servers.
One drawback is that IDrive doesn’t provide unlimited storage plans. If you exceed your storage limit, you’ll be charged extra, so it’s important to monitor your usage closely.
IDrive frequently offers discounts, so be sure to check for promotions before signing up. At the time of writing this review, they had a 90% discount on their 5TB plan for the first year!
For payments, IDrive accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express—but no PayPal, Bitcoin, IOUs, or hugs!
