Omnisend is specifically tailored for e-commerce businesses, meaning you must have an online store to use it. Its clear focus is on driving revenue through targeted email marketing campaigns for web store owners.

Curious about how well it delivers on this promise, I explored Omnisend’s features, particularly its potential for boosting online sales.

What is Omnisend ?

Omnisend is an email and SMS marketing platform specifically designed for e-commerce businesses. It offers tools to help online store owners engage with their customers, boost sales, and automate marketing campaigns. With features like segmentation, automation workflows, personalized email templates, and integration with e-commerce platforms like Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce, Omnisend focuses on driving revenue through targeted communication. The platform also includes SMS marketing, push notifications, and various integrations, making it a comprehensive marketing tool for online retailers.

FEATURES |5.0| ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Comprehensive Features with Impressive Extras

Omnisend is an excellent choice for essential email marketing functions. It includes all the fundamental tools—sign-up forms, basic segmentation, list management, A/B testing, flexible automation workflows, and a user-friendly drag-and-drop email editor for campaign creation.

However, one noticeable drawback is the absence of landing pages that go beyond just sign-up forms. Additionally, I’ve encountered email marketing platforms that offer a wider variety of campaign templates.

Overall, I found the available tools to be intuitive and easy to navigate.

Email Campaigns, Templates, and Personalization

Omnisend’s email editor is continuously updated, so users can expect regular improvements.

I found the editor user-friendly, with numerous customization options. Its drag-and-drop interface allows anyone to design emails effortlessly—if you can use a mouse, you can create a campaign in Omnisend.

There’s also a variety of themed templates to kickstart your design process. These templates come pre-filled with content blocks, which you can easily rearrange or style as needed. For those preferring a minimalist approach, a plain text email option is also available.

The email editor is exceptionally user-friendly. You can establish a ‘Global Style’ that applies to the entire email, allowing for cohesive design. As expected, you can easily add sections, rearrange them with a simple click, adjust column spacing, modify padding, add alt text to images, and customize button styles, shapes, and colors.

Given Omnisend’s focus on e-commerce, it offers a wider range of content block options compared to most email marketing services. These include store-specific features like product listings, a Product Picker tool that lets you incorporate products directly from your online store, and discount blocks that generate automatic codes for Shopify and BigCommerce.

stand out features

Omnisend doesn’t provide a stock image library, so you’ll need to upload your own images. However, it compensates with a robust set of image editing tools.

You can personalize content (such as name, age, or location) within subject lines, body content, and elements like titles, descriptions, links, or button text. Dynamic personalization allows certain content to appear or not, based on the recipient’s characteristics or actions.

Note that dynamic content can only be set within Automation workflows.

Additionally, Omnisend lets you use your own store or business details from the ‘Account’ section, ideal for businesses with multiple locations or selling in various currencies. Customizing product recommendations is also possible, even on the free plan.

Omnisend supports A/B testing, where two versions of an email campaign are sent to different groups to compare their performance before launching the full campaign.

a/b testing

One standout feature of Omnisend is the Campaign Booster, which prompts you to create two subject lines for your campaign. It’s a smart tactic that gives you two chances to engage recipients. If the email isn’t opened within 48 hours, it’s automatically resent with the second subject line.

Additionally, you can post campaigns to your Facebook page or Amazon store, but oddly, you can’t use the same campaign across email, SMS, and push notifications.

Mailing Lists and Segmentation

Regarding mailing lists and segmentation, importing contacts is straightforward. Omnisend supports imports from spreadsheet files like .xlsx, though manually mapping fields like first name and last name can be tedious if your list has many properties.

Before adding new contacts to your list, you must confirm that they’ve consented to receive marketing communications. This step is crucial for data protection and privacy compliance.

Unlike some email marketing services, Omnisend doesn’t prompt you to save new contacts to specific lists. Instead, it offers tools to manage a single list through Tags and Segments.

Tags are customizable; you can create any category by selecting a contact, going to Tags, and adding a new label. This flexibility allows for quick and easy group creation.

Segments, however, use existing data—both personal information and behavioral data from interactions with your campaigns—to categorize contacts automatically.

You can apply unlimited filters to a segment, choosing from up to 50 contact properties and a wide range of behavioral data, giving you endless possibilities. However, there’s a limit to the number of active segments: 20 on the free plan, 100 on Standard, and 200 on Pro.

Omnisend enhances list management with its Customer Breakdown feature, which leverages data from your store to categorize customers based on their lifecycle stage with your business.

Unlike a simple engagement score, lifecycle mapping tracks customer development, aiming to gradually boost engagement. I appreciate how Customer Breakdown simplifies lifecycle mapping, making it easy for even beginners to implement the recommended tactics

Another valuable feature is the Suggestions tab, which provides a list of segments you’re likely to need, such as inactive subscribers or your most engaged contacts.

A critical issue is ensuring that you stop sending emails to those who unsubscribe. Omnisend doesn’t have a traditional ‘suppression list’ that automatically updates when someone unsubscribes. However, you can create a segment and export unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts.

Omnisend uses a traffic light system to indicate ‘Channel Status’: green for subscribed contacts, yellow for non-subscribed ones (such as customers who haven’t opted into marketing), and red for those who have flagged your emails as spam or unsubscribed. Campaigns are automatically restricted to green contacts.

24/7 Support: Omnisend provides reliable customer support via chat and email.

Cons of Omnisend

Limited to E-commerce: Omnisend is focused on e-commerce businesses, so it’s not ideal for non-e-commerce businesses looking for an email marketing solution.

Lack of Stock Image Library: Unlike some competitors, Omnisend does not offer a built-in image library, requiring users to source and upload their own images.

Limited Landing Pages: The landing page options are basic and not well-suited for complex marketing campaigns that require dedicated pages.

Segmentation Limitations on Free Plan: The number of active segments is capped on the free plan (20), which might restrict users with larger lists.

No Native Social Media Integration: Campaigns can’t be simultaneously shared across social media channels like Instagram or Twitter.

No Refund Policy: Omnisend doesn’t offer refunds, so it’s important to test the platform thoroughly before committing to a long-term plan.

Landing Pages & Forms

Landing Pages & Forms A landing page is designed specifically for marketing campaigns, serving as a destination for customers clicking through emails, PPC ads, or social media. Unfortunately, Omnisend’s landing pages are harder to find, being part of the Forms section.

Typically, landing pages are useful for exclusive promotions or tracking conversions from a specific campaign, but Omnisend’s options for landing pages are limited. Disappointingly, there’s no way to create standalone product landing pages linked directly to email campaigns, which feels like a missed opportunity, given the platform’s focus on e-commerce.

landing page forms

Regarding sign-up forms, Omnisend offers both pop-up and embedded options, utilizing the same six templates. While these templates are functional, they lack visual appeal and provide limited customization features.

Automation

Let’s face it—if email marketing is beneficial for your business, you’ll want your subscriber list to expand continually. However, as it grows, managing it can become time-consuming. That’s where automation comes into play.

Email marketing automation allows you to schedule emails to be sent automatically based on specific recipient actions. For instance, a welcome email for new subscribers can be sent without the hassle of doing it manually. Automation takes care of this for you.

I was impressed with Omnisend’s automation capabilities. If the thought of creating an automation workflow feels daunting, don’t worry—it’s simpler than it seems.

Like many leading email marketing platforms, Omnisend utilizes a visual workflow editor for automation management. These workflows are based on conditional statements—if X occurs, then Y follows; if not, Z happens.

If this still seems too complex, Omnisend provides pre-made workflow templates that you can either use directly or tailor to your needs. There are a total of 33 workflow templates available.

Workflow templates

One notable aspect of Omnisend’s automation features is that they are available across all plans, including the Free tier. This positions Omnisend alongside services like Sendinblue, which is recognized for its generous free plan that offers access to essential features.

Given its strong focus on e-commerce, Omnisend excels in providing automation options tailored for sales scenarios. While there are a few “fluffy” workflows aimed at fostering customer relationships—such as welcoming new subscribers or sending birthday greetings—the majority are centered on business objectives. For instance, there are automated emails for reaching out to customers who have abandoned their carts, encouraging them to complete their purchases.

Some workflows demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of email marketing strategies in a retail context. For example, in addition to sending a follow-up email to cross-sell products after a purchase, you can also set up A/B test automations to evaluate different time delays for these follow-ups. This allows you to discover when customers are most likely to respond—whether it’s after one day, a week, or two weeks.

Furthermore, you can incorporate personalized product recommendations based on each customer’s purchase history.

Some email marketing platforms enable you to automate certain aspects of list management directly within the workflow builder, such as adjusting contact attributes like engagement scores based on email interactions or applying and modifying segments. While Omnisend does not provide these specific features, it does allow you to automatically add tags to contacts.

For instance, if a contact doesn’t respond to your attempt to prompt them about an abandoned cart, you can tag them accordingly. This effectively categorizes them with other contacts in a similar situation, allowing you to leverage this information to create segments for future campaigns.

Although this process isn’t as seamless as automatically generating segments or altering engagement scores within a workflow, it still offers a useful option for managing your contacts.

DELIVERABILITY |4.0| ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Tough Talk on Anti-Spam Policies Doesn’t Translate into Action

Deliverability is a critical factor when selecting an email marketing service, yet it’s also quite complex. Many reviews tout claims like “X has a deliverability rate of 90%,” but I advise caution regarding such figures. They often stem from tests where someone sends a dummy campaign to known email addresses and calculates how many reach the inbox.

If only deliverability were that simple! Unfortunately, it’s a fluid metric that can change dramatically between campaigns. A few spam reports can quickly damage your “sender reputation.”

At Website Planet, we assess deliverability by examining what email marketing services can do to enhance it and reduce spam flags. One key factor is domain authentication, which helps confirm to email ISPs that your messages are legitimate. Omnisend provides two forms of authentication—DKIM and SPF—requiring you to add your domain to your emails. This setup is relatively easy for Omnisend users since you’ll already have a domain for your online store.

Both DKIM and SPF authentication are available across all plans, including the free version. While some technical setup is needed, such as adding a “domain signature” to your domain name system (DNS), Omnisend offers guidance based on your e-commerce platform.

Omnisend also adopts a strict anti-spam policy, repeatedly emphasizing its status as a “permission-based” service—meaning your contacts must opt in to receive emails. It actively monitors how lists are uploaded and may require the deletion of any contacts not explicitly subscribed.

Moreover, Omnisend prohibits affiliate marketing or promoting brands other than your own, maintaining a firm stance against spammy practices. The platform verifies new accounts and tracks bounce rates and spam reports. If over 4% of your emails bounce or more than 0.1% are marked as spam, Omnisend may suspend your account.

This stringent approach benefits deliverability. Excessive spammy, bounced, or flagged emails can tarnish an email marketing service’s reputation, affecting all users—not just those sending spam.

To test Omnisend’s commitment to anti-spam policies, I attempted to upload a list of fictitious email addresses.

It’s disheartening that Omnisend’s strong stance against spam didn’t translate into actively blocking my test list. Competing services like GetResponse have successfully passed similar tests. I simply left the ‘subscribed’ checkbox selected, and Omnisend allowed me to upload almost all the fictitious contacts.

While attempting to send a campaign to this list might lead to my account being suspended due to high bounce rates, the damage to other users would already be inflicted—all those bounces would tarnish Omnisend’s reputation.

ANALYTICS & REPORTING |4.7| ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Omnisend's analytics and reporting features are primarily focused on sales and conversions

Omnisend’s analytics and reporting features clearly emphasize that, although it primarily functions as an email marketing service, its ultimate goal is to boost sales through your online store. This focus is evident in the various graphs, tables, and statistics displayed on the main Dashboard.

Dashboard Overview SALES Performance

In addition to a main overview, the Dashboard includes six additional tabs for various reports. The Live View displays real-time contributions of your campaigns and activities to sales performance. The Funnels tab categorizes contacts into different “stages” based on their engagement with your campaigns—whether they’ve clicked a link, made a purchase, or ignored your outreach.

This tool offers valuable insights into not just who interacts with your emails, but also who ultimately makes purchases from your store.

The Products reporting section provides extensive data on which products and product pages receive the most and least views and purchases resulting from your campaigns.

The Retention tab presents key metrics, such as the rate of returning customers and their revenue contributions, along with detailed analysis of the behavior of your most loyal customers. This information helps you refine your campaign strategies and customer journeys to encourage repeat business.

Omnisend reports

The last two tabs on the Dashboard, dedicated to campaigns and workflows, are exclusive to the Pro plan. These sections provide insights into which campaigns and workflows are most effective in boosting your profits, along with comparisons at the channel level for email, SMS, push notifications, automations, and more.

This functionality is quite sophisticated. While Omnisend does provide standard email marketing analytics in the Reports tab, it is less prominently featured than the sales-oriented data.

One reporting feature that particularly stood out to me was the ‘click map’:

Visual click map reporting

Another noteworthy feature that caught my eye was the ability to compare your campaign performance against benchmark averages from your industry.

SUPPORT |4.8| ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Live Chat-Style Support Exceeds Omnisend’s Expectations!

Regardless of whether you’re a seasoned email marketer or a complete beginner, there will likely come a time when you need some help, especially after signing up for a new service.

During my testing of Omnisend, I had to reach out to the support team multiple times as I navigated the online store link, an area I wasn’t very familiar with.

Omnisend features a convenient support icon at the bottom left of every page, making it easy to access help whenever you need it.

Clicking on the icon opens a Live Chat-style window where you can message a support agent directly. While the chat option isn’t available on the free plan, you can still email the Omnisend support team with your questions.

I refer to it as ‘Live Chat-style’ rather than just ‘Live Chat’ because, upon my first contact (to inquire about email sending limits), I received a notification stating that a response could take “a few hours.” Not exactly the definition of ‘live’ chat.

However, I found that Omnisend was underselling themselves. I received a prompt reply in just a few minutes.

When I immediately posed a follow-up question, the same quick response occurred. Not only was it timely, but it was also relevant and informative, providing me with exactly the information I needed.

Omnisend promotes its live support as a 24/7 service. Being based in the UK like I am, I sent my next query after office hours (at 7:30 PM). Once again, despite the indication that it would take a few hours, I received a reply within minutes.

On another occasion, I asked a more technical question about list-cleaning features and anti-spam protections. Initially, the friendly ‘bot’ provided an automated response, directing me to a series of articles related to my inquiry (which showcased impressive interpretive AI capabilities).

However, within just a few minutes, I received a direct message from a member of the support team. They were both professional and personable in their communication. What I appreciated this time was their honesty—they informed me that Omnisend does not offer any automated list-cleaning tools.

PRICING |4.9| ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Competitive Pricing for Affordable Plans with Impressive Key Features

Omnisend appears to have streamlined its pricing structure. Paid plans are based on the number of contacts you have, with pricing tiers starting at up to 500 contacts and extending to 199,999. Beyond that, you’ll need to apply for ‘custom pricing.’

While 200,000 contacts might seem substantial, it’s important to note that some competitors, like Sendinblue, do not impose limits on the size of your contact lists.

One aspect I appreciate about Omnisend’s pricing is that they don’t charge for unsubscribed contacts. It’s frustrating when services count unsubscribed contacts in your total, making you feel like you’re paying for something you aren’t using.

Another positive change is that the Pro plan no longer has a cap on the number of emails you can send; previously, it allowed for 15 times the number of contacts you had paid for. However, the Standard plan still maintains the previous calculation—providing 12 times the number of paid contacts. This means that even if you pay for the minimum of 500 contacts but only have 100 active contacts, you’d be limited to sending just 1,200 emails per month. This seems quite unfair to me, as it results in paying for more than you can actually use. Competing services like ActiveCampaign offer unlimited emails across all plans, which is worth considering.

Aside from this limitation, the Standard plan offers excellent value. At ₹1506 for up to 500 contacts or $20 for up to 1,000, the pricing is competitive. You also gain access to all campaign types (email, SMS, and push notifications), automation features, list-building tools, unlimited users on the same account, and 24/7 support, making it a compelling offer.

Conversely, the Pro plan feels pricey. Starting at ₹4936 a month, the main advantages are unlimited emails, free SMS campaign credits, advanced reporting options, up to 200 active segments, and ‘priority support.’

The main goal of Omnisend is to leverage email marketing to drive revenue for your online store. However, I don’t believe the extra features in the Pro plan justify the higher cost when compared to the Standard plan, particularly in terms of potential revenue generation.

So, what does the Free plan offer? Omnisend’s Free plan is surprisingly generous. While it allows sending to only 250 contacts per month and a maximum of 500 emails, you can still maintain an unlimited number of contacts on your list. Beyond that, you gain access to all the core features available in the Standard (and Pro) plans.

For start-up businesses looking to understand the benefits of email marketing before scaling up, the Free plan is an excellent starting point.

Payment is only accepted by card, specifically Visa, MasterCard, and American Express—so those without these options may be out of luck. Additionally, there are no refunds for cancellations, but Omnisend bills monthly in advance, allowing you to use the service until the end of the current billing period if you decide to cancel.
